It took me some time before I joined Facebook. I thought it's just
another friendster and I don't have time for such things. But my friends
keep on telling me to join FB and finally I did. I got hooked.
My
3rd and 4th graders are so hooked to computer games. My firstborn
especially loves war games that his note books and pad papers are full
of drawing of soldiers and tanks. He can recite different kind of
weapons, tanks and chopper. It's alarming! I thought of creating an FB
account for them so I can trace the kind of games they play. There are
lots of good stuff in FB.
But is it the right thing to
do? Encouraging kids to explore the internet? I read a lot of blogs
about this. There are lots of good stuff in the internet and bad stuff
as well. How can we filter out the evil ones and protect our kids from
the bad influence of the internet?
I was surprised to
see a lot of school graders (my children's classmates, friends, even my
nephews and nieces) in facebook. It took me a long time to decide to
allow my two little ones access to FB. If I do, then I am telling them
that it is okay to lie about their age. If I don't, then they get left
out. But how many internet users divulge their correct birthdates? I was
surprised that in FB you see real names and faces.
In the end, I created an FB account for my kids.
